In most situations, especially where there are large volumes of
data involved, the essence of backing up is Tape, Tape, Tape every
time. However, there are some situations where tape often isn't
the whole answer, and those usually involve the ubiquitous email
duo - Outlook & Outlook Express.
Both Outlook Express and Outlook (when it isn't operating as a
client to Exchange Server) store email information on the local
hard drive, and while the network servers (if there are any) are
usually backed up, workstations tend to be left to take their chances
because "all the important data's on the server".
This inevitably leaves email data at risk.
Until recently, backing up Outlook or Express was a tedious process.
To locate your data files, you'd need to search for .dbx files or
.pst files, depending on which product you use, if the machine has
multiple users or identities, you'd need to work out which sets
of files were yours, and either copy the files or use something
like WinZip to compress them and copy them somewhere else. Very
tedious, very time consuming, and therefore in our experience, very,
very likely to be "forgotten".
But not any more...

WinBackup allows you to password protect your backup, perform full
or incremental backups and copy the previous backup before overwriting
it with the current backup. It is also capable of closing Outlook,
to prevent any file locking problems, and will even allow you to
split the backup into files of a particular size, and excluding
files with particular extensions.
And finally, when your machine has been repaired, instead of having
to establish where Windows has placed your brand new shiny empty
email files, and copy all the files back, WinBackup will do the
lot, automatically with a couple of mouse clicks.
