Comparison Table for Minimum System Requirements for VPOP3 and VPOP3 Enterprise

Because IMAP4 means that messages are stored and manipulated on the server instead of the client, this means that a VPOP3 Enterprise email server needs to have much more disk space than a standard VPOP3 server, and may need to be more powerful as well.

VPOP3 Minimum Systems Requirements (25 user version)

VPOP3

VPOP3 Enterprise

Minimum Pentium PC, recommended 1GHz Pentium 4 or higher processor. The computer does not need to be dedicated to VPOP3, and can be used for other things as well.

Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 and Windows 7.

Minimum 64MB RAM for a 25 user installation. Note: certain operating systems require more memory for example, XP and later require a minimum of 256MB. Recommended 1GB RAM.

100MB hard disk (mostly for user mail storage)

Up to 2.5GB*

Internet Explorer 5.5 or later for WebMail and WebAdmin, recommended Internet Explorer 6 or later.

Internet connection e.g. Modem, ISDN terminal adapter, xDSL connection or Router connection

Internet account with email facilities

TCP/IP networking on the local network

Workstation computers can run on any operating system which supports TCP/IP, and need suitable internet email client software (any email software which supports POP3 & SMTP is suitable).

*You may need to have up to 2.5GB of disk space (for each user to have 100MB of mailbox space).

VPOP3 Extensions

VPOP3 has support for extensions which are external programs which can be plugged-in to VPOP3 to extend and enhance the capabilities of the VPOP3 software.

The VPOP3 Plugin Pack is a set of utilities which can be used to enhance and expand the VPOP3 and VPOP3 Enterprise email servers' functionality for more advanced uses.

The VPOP3 Plugin Pack works with VPOP3 1.3.0 and later, and needs a 5 user or larger license, it will not work with the VPOP3 Home User license. The Plugin Pack is included with the VPOP3 Enterprise software, but is an optional extra for the VPOP3 standard version. For details of the Plug-in Pack see the main product comparison table above.

VPOP3 Protect is a free VPOP3 extension to scan incoming POP3 messages for common email viruses/worms and optionally all .VBS attachments and redirect them to the administrator.

VPOP3PROTECT is not a virus scanner, and should not be used to replace virus scanning on your network, but it can be used as a first line of defence against common viruses carried by email.

There are several User Contributed Extensions for VPOP3 donated by VPOP3 users. These are often supplied with source code so they can be modified to suit your requirements.

VPOP3 can run external programs at the following times:

  • Whenever a message is downloaded from an ISP POP3 mailbox (External Router). (This allows for virus scanning, specialised message routing requirements, message decryption etc).

  • Whenever a message is sent to an external or internal email address, or when a message is received from an incoming SMTP mail feed (OutMail Processor). (This allows for virus scanning, message processing, encryption etc).

  • Whenever a message arrives in a certain VPOP3 mailbox (External Autoresponder). (This can be used for sending complex autoresponse messages (simple autoresponders are built into VPOP3), or automatically linking to databases etc).

  • Whenever VPOP3 connects or disconnects to the Internet. (This can be used to run other Internet tasks etc).

VPOP3 Extensions can be written in most programming languages, such as PERL, C/C++, batch file scripting, Visual Basic and Delphi, etc.
